Gerty Archimède was the first woman to be called to the bar of Guadeloupe in 1939, thus becoming the first woman lawyer in the French West Indies. In 1948, she joined the French Communist Party, which appointed her to represent it in numerous conferences around the world. . In 1980, she chaired the 7th congress of the Guadeloupe Communist Party. She was then elected deputy of Guadeloupe under the first legislature of the Fourth Republic.
