Why take out cancellation insurance for a holiday in Guadeloupe?

Guadeloupe needs to be booked well in advance. There are often several months between your booking and your arrival in Pointe-Noire — and that is precisely when the unexpected can happen: a hospital stay, leave refused by your employer, redundancy, or a stolen passport a few days before departure.

Our general terms and conditions of sale set out a cancellation fee scale. Cancellation insurance goes a step further: it covers the cancellation costs that you would otherwise have to pay, in the circumstances specified in the policy, without you having to negotiate anything with us.

This insurance is optional. It is taken out directly with Meetch, which manages it exclusively.

What Meetch’s cancellation insurance covers

Cancellation cover, before your arrival

Cancellation cover takes effect on the day the insurance policy is taken out and expires on the day you set off on your trip.

It reimburses you for the cancellation fees charged to you, in accordance with the applicable cancellation scale, up to the cost of the holiday declared at the time of taking out the cover and subject to the limits set out below.

The following are not reimbursable: administration fees, tips, visa fees, tourist taxes, and the insurance premium itself.

Cover for curtailment of your holiday, once you have arrived at your destination

If you have to cut your holiday short, the insurance will reimburse you — and any policyholders travelling with you — for any pre-paid but unused land-based services, on a pro rata basis, from the night following the event. Transport is not included.

This cover also applies if a family member who has remained in mainland France suffers a serious illness, a serious physical accident or death, or in the event of theft, fire, explosion or water damage at your home or business premises requiring your presence.

Compensation limits

Garantie - Cover
Plafonds - Limits
Trip interruption fees (early return)
€10,000 per person
Cancellation due to all random causes
€10,000 per person, limited to €40,000 per stay
Cancellation due to medical reasons
€10,000 per person, limited to €40,000 per stay

In any event, the compensation may not exceed the cost of the holiday declared when the policy was taken out.

Reasons for cancellation covered

The list below sets out the reasons for cancellation provided by Meetch. Each reason applies subject to the conditions, limits and exclusions set out in the policy information leaflet, which we urge you to read before taking out the policy. In the event of any discrepancy, only the policy information leaflet shall prevail.

  • Refusal of a tourist visa by the authorities of the destination country

  • Riots, attacks, acts of terrorism or piracy, pollution resulting from an industrial accident, an epidemic or a natural disaster occurring in France or at the destination — subject to two cumulative conditions: the event has caused material damage and bodily injury in the destination town or within a 100 km radius, and your departure is scheduled to take place less than 30 days after the event

  • Any other unforeseen event constituting an immediate, genuine and serious obstacle preventing your departure: a sudden, unforeseeable circumstance beyond your control, having a direct causal link with the impossibility of travelling

What the insurance does not cover

We prefer to tell you clearly what is not covered. The main exclusions are as follows:

  • Border closures. The Cancellation cover does not cover the inability to travel due to border closures, logistical issues, accommodation conditions or security conditions at the destination.

  • The absence of an unforeseen event.

  • Any circumstance that merely detracts from the enjoyment of the trip.

  • Suicide and attempted suicide.

  • War, civil unrest, and nuclear fission.

This list is a summary. The full and legally binding list is set out in Articles 2 and 3 of the information leaflet, which we urge you to read in full before taking out cover.

How to take out cancellation insurance

When should you take out the policy?

As soon as possible, ideally on the same day as your booking. The policy excludes any event occurring between the date of booking your holiday and the date the insurance is taken out: any unforeseen event arising during this period will not be covered.

Cancellation cover takes effect on the day the policy is taken out and expires on the day of your departure.

How much does the insurance cost?

The premium depends on the cost of your booking. The Meetch application form provides you with an instant quote before you commit to anything. Payment is made via a secure credit card transaction.

The insurance premium is non-refundable.

Your right to withdraw

In accordance with Article L112-10 of the Insurance Code, if you take out the cover for non-business purposes and can provide evidence of prior cover for any of the risks covered by the policy, you may withdraw from it free of charge and without penalty within fourteen calendar days of its conclusion — provided that the policy has not been fully executed and that you have not made any claims.

Apart from this case, termination of the contract is not permitted.

Report a claim and get a refund

How soon must I report a claim?

The claim must be made in two stages:

  1. Notify us immediately, as soon as the first symptoms of illness appear or as soon as you become aware of the event, at à booking{@}habitationsamanabeausejour.com.

  2. Report the claim to Meetch within five working days of the event, via the online claims portal.

After this period, if the delay in reporting causes financial loss to the insurer, the right to compensation may be forfeited.

Documents to provide

Your written claim must be accompanied by:

  • in the event of illness or accident: a medical certificate and/or a hospital admission form specifying the cause, nature, severity and foreseeable consequences;

  • in the event of death: a death certificate and a civil status certificate;

  • in other cases: any supporting documentation for the reason for cancellation;

  • in all cases: the invoice for your stay.

Meetch states that claims will be processed within 24 working hours of receipt of the supporting documents, and a refund will be issued within 48 hours.

The insurer reserves the right to have the claim assessed by its medical adviser; refusing such an assessment without a legitimate reason will result in the loss of the right to cover.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about cancellation insurance

Is cancellation insurance compulsory when booking with you?

No. Meetch cancellation insurance is entirely optional and has no bearing on your booking at Habitation Caféière Samana Beauséjour. It is taken out directly with Meetch, separately from your holiday.

What is the maximum amount reimbursed?

€10,000 per person for the Cancellation cover, up to a limit of €40,000 per stay, and €10,000 per person for the Interruption of Stay cover. The compensation may never exceed the price of the stay declared at the time of taking out the cover.

Will I be reimbursed if my flight to Pointe-à-Pitre is cancelled?

That depends on the cause. A transport strike taking place in France, with 48 hours’ notice given before the start of the holiday and where no alternative means of transport is available, is covered. However, the carrier’s failure, including financial failure, is excluded, as is the inability to travel due to border closures.

Are cyclones or heavy swells in Guadeloupe covered?

No. Meteorological or climatic events are excluded, as are natural disasters falling under the procedure set out in Law No. 82-600 of 13 July 1982.

How long after booking do I have to take out cover?

You can take out cancellation insurance up to 72 hours after your holiday has been confirmed. Please note: any event occurring between the date of booking your holiday and the date on which you take out the insurance is excluded. You should therefore take out cover as soon as possible.

Are a positive PCR test or being identified as a close contact covered?

Meetch provides information on cover for these two situations. The policy information leaflet, for its part, refers to serious illness resulting from an epidemic or pandemic declared within 30 days prior to departure. If this is a key consideration for you, please seek written confirmation from Meetch before taking out cover.

What happens if I have to cut my stay short?

The ‘Trip Interruption’ cover reimburses you for pre-paid, unused land-based services on a pro rata basis, starting from the night following the event. Transport costs are not covered. You must notify Meetch within five working days.

Is the insurance premium refunded if I cancel?

No. The premium, administration fees, tips, visa fees and tourist taxes are non-refundable.

Can I cancel my insurance policy?

Cancellation is not permitted. However, you have a right of withdrawal of fourteen calendar days if you take out the policy for non-professional purposes and can provide evidence of prior cover for one of the risks covered by the policy, provided that the policy has not been fully executed and no claim has been made.

Who should I contact in the event of a dispute?

First write to Meetch (reclamation@meetch.io), then to the CMAM – Claims Department, 22 rue Nève, C.S. 40056, Bar-le-Duc Cedex. As a last resort: La Médiation de l’Assurance, TSA 50110, 75441 Paris Cedex 09.
