The Zamana, or Samana, the rain tree and emblem of the Samana Beauséjour Coffee Plantation in Guadeloupe

The Zamana, also known as the Samana, is the heart and soul of our coffee plantation in Pointe-Noire, on Basse-Terre (Guadeloupe). This majestic rain tree has lent its name to our guesthouse and has featured on our logo since the very beginning. Often imitated, never equalled: discover the authentic tree during your stay in our 5-star eco-lodges.

What is the Zamana? The rain tree (Samanea saman)

The Zamana, or Samana, is known as the rain tree or Haitian blackwood; its former botanical name is Samanea saman.

Native to South America and a member of the Fabaceae family, this tropical tree is found throughout the Neotropical region, where it was once used to provide shade for coffee plantations and livestock.

The Zamana can grow up to 25m tall, with an umbrella-shaped crown reaching 40m in diameter.

In Thailand, in the district of Dan Makham Tia, one specimen stands 18m tall with a diameter of 61m.

Its distinctive feature is that it folds up its leaflets at night and when it rains, hence its name, the "rain tree".

Our Zamana was planted in 1993. It is therefore 33 years old.

It is firmly rooted on the plateau of the morne. Despite its youth, our big baby already boasts impressive measurements:

  • Height: 15m  (49,2126 ft)

  • Canopy diameter: 20m  (65,61 ft)

  • Circumference of the trunk: 4m20  (165,35 in)

  • Diameter of the trunk: 2m67  (105,12 in)

It shades the old Caféière Beauséjour Coffee Plantation, the heart of our estate, just as the rain trees used to do in the coffee plantations of yesteryear.

An emblem turned logo: the original, often imitated, never equalled

The Zamana is the historic emblem of the Habitation Caféière Samana Beauséjour: it is our logo and inspired the very name of the establishment. Whilst other establishments in Guadeloupe have since adopted the name "Samana", the tree that represents us grows here, in Pointe-Noire, at the heart of our environmental commitment (Clef Verte, Esprit Parc National). Come and admire it, and relax in its shade, during a stay in our guest rooms and 5-star eco-lodges.

Where can you see a Zamana in Guadeloupe?

You can discover our Zamana during a stay at the Habitation Caféière Samana Beauséjour, in Pointe-Noire, on the leeward coast of Basse-Terre. Our guests are free to enjoy its giant shade, just a few steps from the table d’hôtes and the ecolodges.
